What is a group?
A group is a couple of people who have some kind of common interest or goal. These people collaborate to achieve this goal, or they participate in a common interest. This is as simple as playing video games with a couple of friends, or working with them to defeat the other team. A soccer team is a great example of a group that works together to achieve the common goal of victory, and at the same time both teams are a group participating in the common interest of soccer.
Criteria for a group -- my version
The first reading listed eight criteria of a group. Of the eight I agree with six. The two I do not agree with are face to face interaction and recognition by others. The other six seem pretty hard to argue because they are the basic necessities to define something as a group. Face to face interaction however, is not necessary in my opinion. Websites like MySpace and Facebook offer all kinds of groups you can join full of people that share a common interest. Some of these people could live across the country from you, yet you still share a common interest and are part of the same group. Recognition by others isn’t necessary because there have been plenty of secret organizations over the years that are groups. Yet unless you were a member, you would not know about them. The only reason we do find out about them are because most of the times these groups participate in illegal activities and we do not find out about them until they get shut down by the government or police.
