What is a group
A group is a unity of two or more people with multiple similarities. Group may be created for common goals, interests, fates, or characteristics. The idea behind the group is to offer the members a feeling of safety as they develop themselves and each other. The members help each other learn through common tasks, conflicts, and successes. In the end each members learns a great deal about himself and the people surrounding him, or the population in general, and is able to separate from the group and become a self sufficient member of a much larger group, society. Successful groups include different amounts of members but demonstrate high amounts of respect between the members and a strong sense of cooperation in the group as a whole. Once all the group members no longer fear judgment or failure they bond well and are able to cooperate.
Discuss a group you belong to
Out of many groups one of the most successful one i find is the group of people i played soccer with this summer. The group started out as a very small unity of people with a common goal of becoming better at soccer while also having a great time. Originally the group did not bond very well, people were clinching to one or two other people they had bonded with. People were very judgmental of others and their failures as goal keepers, forwards, or defenders. With everyones failures at some things, while successes at other things the group bonded more and began to realize that nobody was perfect and that they all completed each other. The games became peaceful and both much better but also more fun. Compliments were being administered and support had developed between the members. As time went on people were discovering their roles in the group and being very fond of them. The group ended with the beginning of school but success was reached. Many people left the group with success and some people even joined soccer teams.
Criteria for a group
The defined criteria is
-formal social structure
-face-to-face interaction
-2 or more persons
-common fate
-common goals
-interdependence
-self-definition as group members
-recognition by others
A group does require more than 1 person, and the group must share some similarities. They must share either a common goal or fate, because a fate will give them a goal to work towards, and without a goal the group has no purpose or any original activity to begin bonding over. All the members must consider themselves part of the group, and must be recognized and respected by every other member. The only criteria i disagree with is face-to-face interaction, and formal social structure. Many groups have been created over the Internet with a common purpose such as programming some software, or improving existing software. Many of these people will never meet each other until sometimes after they have accomplished their tasks. Also i do not believe that a group must have a very formal social structure. Different people may take charge at different meetings depending on the case and the group may continue to function properly without a defined leader, ranking, or organization. As long as the members respect each other and listen to each other there is no need for any other organization.
What have you learned in the Information facet that is useful in group communication?
The Information facet of IST has bonded very well with the CAS 100b class. Professor Jansen has before each class a different writing assignment due and during the class a group project. Each assignment has helped my group for CAS come closer because we try to figure out what exactly the assignment is as a group. The readings due for each assignment are sometimes explained between our group when someone does not understand. Even though we split up and write our own paper and discuss our own ideas, we help each other understand the reading and what to do. In addition to this our group has to work on the in class assignments as a group. We create different grouping sections or answer questions relating to data or information or the information journey discussed in class.
What have you learned in your CAS class that is useful in the Information facet of IST?
In CAS we discussed P-MOPS problem solving strategy. This has become applied to many different assignments such as our PowerPoint assignment last Thursday. During this assignment we had to create a relationship between six random words.
What examples from your group's interaction are relevant to a Information perspective?
Our groups interaction has been a great example of information. Every member of the group has some sort of data and information which we then combine. By combining all of the information and applying it through the P-MOPS model our group gains knowledge and when everything is solved wisdom is achieved. Through the P-MOPS model our group moves through the Information Journey and discovers great wisdom. Also another thing we learned in the Information facet is that everything can somehow be interlinked. This is always applied by our group when things do not make sense and we are not sure how to answer a question. We try to relate the problem or whatever we are discussing to something familiar to all of our members.
How do you think what you have learned in the Information facet will affect your future career?
In the information facet of IST we have learned a number of different things that will be very useful in future courses and careers. One of the most important ones is the use of excel. In one of the classes we learned to combine excel spreadsheets and numerous settings of Excel that could help make data collections more professional. Freeze-frames, and interfaces are very useful tools to use in excel and can make a presentation or report seem a lot more professional in future careers. In the last class we created a Powerpoint with text boxes, connectors, and animation schemes to help describe a hierarchy of terms. Through this our entire group gained a significant amount of Powerpoint experience and was able to to overcome some technical problems through the PMOPS model.
