Progress Report Assignment

The progress report for your course project outlines your progress toward the goal you set out in your proposal. Your group will prepare a document and present the report in class. Specific requirements for each are listed below.

Progress Report Document

You will prepare the progress report as a memorandum of at least 500 words addressed to your instructor. The progress report should be written in paragraph format, not bullet point format (although you may use short bulleted lists and/or tables where appropriate). It may be single or double spaced. Professionalism counts, so be sure your progress report is well-formatted and free of spelling and grammar errors. Include your group logo as a letterhead.

Your progress report must include the following elements:

  • Restatement of problem and solution. Remind your audience again of the problem (exigence) and your proposed solution. If you need to make changes to your solution, state what the original solution was and discuss what the changes are. Be sure to include the new exigencies to which your changes are responses.
  • Strategy for solution implementation. Discuss the plan your group has formulated to implement your solution. Identify constraints that have arisen and how you plan to address them. You may also want to talk about how individuals in the group are taking on specific roles in support of the plan. At this stage, it is expected that you will be moving from the “what” of your solution into the “how.”
  • Resources. Outline the resources that your group needs to complete the project. This can include physical materials, information, skills, permissions, support—in short, any ingredients needed to successfully implement your solution. Identify which resources you already possess and which still need to be acquired. Be as detailed as possible.
  • Timetable. Identify milestones in your implementation strategy and assign reasonable deadlines for their completion. You may wish to assign specific tasks to specific group members in this section, although it is not required that you do so. Again, be as detailed as possible.
  • Budget. (optional) If your project requires monetary input of any kind, please include a budget with details on how much will be spent and where the money will come from. Not all groups will need a budget.
  • Evaluation of group processes. Reflect on how well your group has risen to the challenge of addressing a real-world problem. You may wish to address any of the following: group development. norms and roles, conflict, groupthink, problem-solving, meeting effectiveness, etc. Identify both areas in which your group has excelled and ones which require improvement, focusing especially on factors which must be improved if your group is to successfully implement your solution.
There is no minimum requirement for references, but any that do appear must be formatted to MLA or APA standards. You may not use Wikipedia as a reference. Contact your instructor if you are unsure whether a reference is appropriate.

Presentation

Your group will present your progress report in class in a 6-9 minute presentation. You may either designate a group member or members to present on behalf of your group, or all group members may speak. All group members will receive the same grade regardless of how many present.

Required elements:

  • Graceful introduction with an attention-getter, thesis/purpose statement and preview of main points
  • Logically organized body, with evidence supporting main points as necessary
  • Smooth transitions between main points
  • Graceful conclusion with a summary of main points and polished exit
  • Extemporaneous, rehearsed delivery—speak from note cards with main points only
  • Meet time limits
  • Visual aid
  • No verbal citations are required, but any evidence that you use must be cited
You may structure your presentation in any of the following formats:
